Trader Joe’s Traditional Carnitas Review

Published: Sep 23, 2025 by Tatiana · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Trader Joe's Traditional Carnitas is a fully cooked pork product that promises tender, juicy shredded meat-ready for tacos, bowls, or whatever fast Mexican-style setup you want. It comes fresh (not frozen) in the meats section, pre-roasted, so time in the kitchen is minimal.

What's in the package

Looking at the label, it's fairly simple: pork, water, vinegar, salt, sodium phosphate, and a marinade which includes water, concentrated orange juice, and pepper. So yes, there is added flavor, but nothing wild or superprocessed.

There's some fat still present which helps with flavor and moisture. The orange juice concentrate gives a mild sweetness and citrus hint.

Taste and texture

When warmed up properly, this carnitas are quite good. The pork is tender and pulls apart easily. Internal parts are juicy. If you crisp up some edges (in a skillet), the meat gets a nice golden crust in places, which improves texture and adds contrast.

Flavor is mild to moderate: you get pork flavor, a little tang and citrus from the marinade, salt, some pepper-but it doesn't hit you over the head with seasoning. It's not the deepest or richest carnitas out there, but for how easy it is, it does what many expect: decent flavor + easy use.

How we eat it

I usually heat mine up in a dry skillet with a little oil, let the edges brown, then shred it. I use it for tacos with warm corn tortillas, a squeeze of lime, chopped onions and cilantro. Sometimes in a bowl over Trader Joe's Spanish Style Rice, adding black beans and salsa for a fast dinner. Other times I toss it into quesadillas with melty cheese for a quick lunch.

Cooking tips & tricks

  • Skip the microwave if you want crunch. Pan-searing or skillet crisp makes a big difference.
  • Add a splash of fresh orange or lime juice after heating to brighten up the flavors.
  • If the meat seems a bit dry, a drizzle of broth helps bring it back.

Portion size and value

Each package runs around 16 ounces (a full pound) and usually costs about $6-7 depending on location. One pack makes enough for 6-8 tacos, or two hearty bowls with rice and beans. For the convenience and portion size, the value is solid-definitely cheaper than takeout carnitas plates.

Similar products

If you enjoy these carnitas, here are some other savory Trader Joe's products that fit the same category:

  • Trader Joe's White Queso Dip - melty dip that works with carnitas nachos or tacos.
  • Trader Joe's Chicken Taquitos - another easy heat-and-eat Mexican-style option.
  • Trader Joe's Salsa Autentica - simple, clean salsa that brightens up carnitas tacos.

Would I buy again?

Yes, I would. It's not perfect, but it's surprisingly good for how much convenience it offers. For nights when I don't want to cook from scratch, it delivers-especially when I crisp it up and pair with fresh toppings. Pair carnitas with this Santa Julia Cuy Malbec Wine- so good!

Final thoughts

Trader Joe's Traditional Carnitas is solid for what it is: pre-cooked, ready-to-use pork that can go from fridge to taco plate really fast. It doesn't compete with the slow-cooked depth you'd get in a proper Mexican restaurant, but it shines when you want flavor without fuss. I'd give it 4 out of 5 stars.
