Trader Joe’s Unexpected Cheddar is one of those cult favorite cheeses I always keep on hand—it’s sharp, nutty, crumbly, and kind of addictive. So when I saw this new Unexpected Cheddar Cheese Spread, I didn’t even think twice.

Let me say right away: this is a fun one. Whether you’re making a snack board, adding something different to sandwiches, or just want a new dip for crackers and veggies, this spread has a lot going for it. It’s creamy, rich, and still gives you a little bit of that signature Unexpected Cheddar flavor—even if it’s slightly milder than the original.
Flavor and how I used it
The texture is silky and super spreadable—no crumbling or breaking crackers here. It’s got just enough tang to keep it interesting, and a subtle nuttiness that reminds you of the cheddar block it’s based on.
I used it on everything from toast to pretzel crisps to a turkey sandwich, and it worked great each time. It’s easy to dollop, smear, or scoop, so it’s honestly kind of perfect when you need something quick that still feels a little elevated.

I also added a spoonful to scrambled eggs and stirred some into a warm grain bowl—both worked surprisingly well! The flavor holds up without being too strong, which makes it versatile for mixing into other dishes too.
My kids’ verdict? Mixed.
One liked it on toast, the other took one bite and handed the rest to me. I can see it being a hit with cheese-loving adults who like a spread that’s not too bold. It’s mild enough to pair with crackers and fruit, but flavorful enough to stand out on a charcuterie board (along with Trader Joe’s Prosciutto Wrapped Fresh Mozzarella Cheese)

Where to find it
You’ll find it in the refrigerated section, right near the dips and soft cheeses. It’s usually close to the pub cheese and pimento cheese, and the tub looks just like the Unexpected Cheddar block packaging, so it’s easy to spot if you’re already a fan.
Other cheese spreads to try

Final thoughts
This cheese spread is a solid addition to the Trader Joe’s cheese lineup. It’s easy to use, pairs well with a ton of different things, and gives you a little taste of that Unexpected Cheddar flavor without having to cut or shred anything.
Is it as bold and memorable as the original block? Not quite. For me, it’s a little more mellow than I hoped, but still super enjoyable and incredibly useful to have in the fridge. It’s one of those products that’s not flashy but gets the job done—and sometimes that’s exactly what you want.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 out of 5 – smooth, snackable, and worth trying at least once)
