Trader Joe’s Lentils

Published: Sep 7, 2025 by Tatiana · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

Trader Joe’s Lentils might not be the flashiest product in the store, but they’re one of the most practical. For under a dollar, you get a can of cooked lentils that are ready to use straight away. They’re simple, hearty, and a lifesaver when you need something filling without spending extra time in the kitchen.

What’s in the can

Each 15-ounce can comes with just three ingredients: lentils, water, and sea salt. That’s it. No additives or extras—just straightforward lentils that you can take in any direction you want.

How to use them

Since they’re already cooked, you can eat them right out of the can, but I like giving them a little love. They’re perfect stirred into soups, tossed into salads, or quickly sautéed with onions and spices. Sometimes I mix them with roasted veggies and a drizzle of olive oil for an easy, filling lunch.

Taste and texture

The texture is tender but not mushy, with that mild, earthy flavor lentils are known for. On their own they can taste plain, but that’s the beauty of them—they soak up whatever seasoning or sauce you pair them with. Add lemon, garlic, or a handful of fresh herbs, and they transform into something that feels fresh and homemade.

Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Very affordable
  • Already cooked and ready to use
  • Clean, simple ingredients
  • Works with almost any cuisine

Cons:

  • Bland if eaten straight from the can
  • Texture is softer than freshly cooked lentils
  • One can isn’t always enough for a full family meal

My experience

One night I had zero plan for dinner and didn’t feel like cooking from scratch. I opened a can of these lentils, tossed them with leftover roasted vegetables, added some goat cheese, and called it a meal. It tasted like something I actually put thought into, but in reality, it took less than five minutes.

Final thoughts

Trader Joe’s Lentils are not glamorous, but they’re one of those staples I always keep on hand. They’re affordable, healthy, and versatile enough to work in endless meals. I’d rate them 8 out of 10—solid pantry backup that makes life a lot easier.
