Santa Julia Cuy Malbec Wine – Trader Joe’s Review

Published: Feb 24, 2025 · Modified: May 16, 2025 by Tatiana · This post may contain affiliate links · Leave a Comment

I grabbed this Santa Julia Cuy Malbec Natural from Trader Joe’s out of curiosity, and I’m so glad I did! It’s an organic, sulfite-free Malbec from Argentina that’s surprisingly affordable. I love that it has no added sulfites, which is a huge plus for anyone who’s sensitive to them (or just prefers a cleaner wine). At $9.99 a bottle, it’s a solid budget-friendly pick that doesn’t taste cheap.

Taste and Texture

This Malbec is fruit-forward and super smooth. It’s got big, juicy flavors of blueberries, cherries, and plums, with just a hint of spice. It’s not overly tannic, which makes it really easy to drink. The acidity is nicely balanced, so it doesn’t feel too heavy or too light—just right for a casual glass at home.

How I Like to Enjoy It

  • With a good meal – It pairs really well with grilled steak, burgers, or even a mushroom risotto. Or with Trader Joe’s Prosciutto Wrapped Fresh Mozzarella Cheese.
  • Just chilling at home – This is an easy sipper that doesn’t require food to be enjoyable.
  • Slightly chilled – On warmer days, I like to throw it in the fridge for 10-15 minutes before pouring.

Pros and Cons

Pros

  • No added sulfites – Love that it’s a cleaner, more natural wine.
  • Smooth and easy to drink – Not too heavy, not too light.
  • Great value – You’re getting a solid Malbec for just $9.99.
  • Versatile – Works with food but is just as good on its own.

Cons

  • Limited availability – Like most Trader Joe’s finds, it might not always be in stock.
  • Might be different from what you’re used to – If you’re used to conventional Malbecs, the natural wine style might take some adjusting.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for an affordable, easy-drinking red wine with no added sulfites, Santa Julia Cuy Malbec Natural is a great pick. It’s smooth, fruity, and just the right amount of bold without being overpowering. For under $10, it’s a no-brainer!

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐☆ (⅘) – Smooth, Fruity, and a Great Value

Would I buy it again? Yep! It’s a great bottle to have on hand for an easy weeknight glass.
